inch-perfect off-stump yorker from Pathirana. 146.2ks. Rohit digs it out
CSK vs MI, 29th Match at Mumbai, IPL, Apr 14 2024 - Match Result
11.48pm Top defensive bowling from CSK, that. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we did bringing it to you. Until next time, this is Deivarayan Muthu signing off on the behalf of Thilak Ram and Chandan Duorah. Good night and cheers.
11.25pm That is that. CSK halt MI's winning streak at home and seal their first win away from home this IPL. They have defended 206 at the Wankhede, thanks to excellent defensive bowling. Pathirana led the way with 4 for 28 in his four overs. He bows to Bravo, his bowling coach. Bravo would've been proud of his effort from his bowlers. Do stick with us for the post-match presentation.
Gaikwad, CSK captain: Our young wicketkeeper scoring three sixes down the order helped a lot and I think that was the difference. To start off, on this kind of ground, you need 10-15 extra runs. We were looking at 215-220, but Bumrah bowled well. Bowling-wise, we were spot on with our execution. Even in powerplay, I would have taken six overs for 60. These kinds of venues demand both skills: batting and bowling. Our Malinga bowled exceptionally well and nailed those yorkers. Not to forget - even Tushar and Shardul bowled well. We encourage everyone to be in a good headspace. Nothing, Jinks was carrying a bit of a niggle. Thought it was better for him to open and get away quick runs. I'm fine batting anywhere.
Hardik, MI captain: Definitely, gettable. But they bowled pretty well and Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with their plans and used the longer boundary well. They got the hang of it and they have a man behind the stumps telling them what's working. The ball was slightly gripping and they got ahead of the game. Until Pathirana came, we were on course for the total. It was just about what was best at that point (on whether they could have used a spinner to Dube?). To seamers it was more difficult to hit on this wicket. We are now on the road for the next four games. If we are smart, we can get the goal we want.
Pathirana, Player of the Match: When we bowled in powerplay, I was nervous. I then came to do my regular things. I don't think about results and I just think about execution. First of all, I was having a niggle before two weeks and all support staff and players helped me. That's the main thing to have my form.
Thakur: Much-needed win. Playing against opponents like MI, especially at the Wankhede is not easy. Rohit, Ruturaj and Shivam the way they batted...but at the end of the day, we held our nerve better. We spoke about keeping it simple, meaning we need to have fielders where we bowl. This is a repeated pitch and MI played on it on April 11. We felt we needed to bowl slower ones into the pitch. Pathirana was magical and the way he bowled the yorkers was amazing to see. Not much dew today. When Rohit was going strong, we felt the game was sliding away a little but I wanted to challenge Rohit to hit me on the bigger side. If he can't, it might be the turning point.
Sudhir: "In hindsight, those hits from Dhoni towards the very end (20) have made the difference. Dhoni is in top form this year making an impact just when it's needed. I bet he is going to be back for one more season."
Sampath Bandarupalli, our stats wiz: This is the first time Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten in an unsuccessful run-chase in the IPL. His team won on all 18 previous instances where he remained unbeaten in a run-chase.
another yorker, Nabi swings and squirts an inside edge behind to Dhoni
leg-side wide. Pathirana has to re-bowl it
Mayank: "To RCB: This is how you defend against MI. You bowl and field like your life depends on it."
Rohit shuffles across off and picks this full ball away over short fine leg. No chance for Rizvi in the deep
Hundred for Rohit! Full and outside off, 146.6ks, Rohit laces it through the line and puts it away to the left of long-off. He draws big cheers from the Wankhede crowd. But muted celebrations from Rohit himself. He didn't even raise his bat
DJ Bravo applauds Pathirana from the dugout
scorching yorker from Pathirana. Nabi can't bring his bat down in time. MI scamper across for a bye
subtle slower ball outside off at 135ks, Nabi swings early and misses
MI need 34 off the final over. Pathirana to bowl it
muscled away over the wide long-on boundary. Slower cutter angling across off. Rohit shuffles across, gets inside the line and launches a six
another off-side wide from Mustafizur. Wonder if it's the dew
Edwin: "Shardul is having a very good game today. He is everywhere today. Great fielding efforts as well. "
slogged away to Mitchell at long-on
slower cutter, full and wide of off, scythed away to the off-side sweeper
full and wide of off, driven to the right of long-off. Good defensive bowling once again from CSK
edged but falls short of Thakur at short third. Good effort from him, nevertheless. Very full and wide of off. Rohit throws his bat at ball and carves an outside edge
off-side wide from Mustafizur as he does not get the wide yorker right
short and into the pitch. Suspect it was the on-pace delivery from Mustafizur. Hauled away to Mitchell at long-on
yorker on off stump, driven down the ground for a double. What an effort from Pathirana. He still has one over left
Srihari: "As a hard core Man City and CSK fan, having a fantastic day so far. "
shortish and outside off, Rohit aims to scoop it over short fine leg. No dice. He cops it on his body
Velu: "Lot of CSK chants after that wicket. Looks like every game is home game for CSK. "
yorker on the leg stump, glanced away to short fine leg
Nabi at No.8
Nope. Pathirana knocks Shepherd over with a 149.3ks missile. Beaten for pace. Dhoni applauds him from behind the stumps. Not quite a yorker, very full and slings in, gathers pace off the pitch and knocks out the leg stump. Bam! What a sight for a fast bowler
Romario is a Super King in the SA20. Can he go after the Super Kings in the IPL?
pretty full on off, almost a yorker, which is swiped away to deep midwicket off the inner half
